THE CLIENT
A Payments Technology Provider Whose Core Card Management System Was Holding Back Every Bank It Served
The client is a financial technology provider offering card management and processing solutions to financial institutions, with its Card Management System serving as the core platform for card issuance, lifecycle management, and transaction services across multiple banking clients.
Increasing market demands, frequent feature requests, and the need to support diverse financial institution requirements were all running into the same wall: a legacy monolithic architecture that was too slow, too fragile, and too costly to maintain.
The client engaged Opus to re-architect the CMS into a modern, scalable, and extensible platform that could grow with its banking client base rather than constrain it.
THE CONTEXT
A Tightly Coupled Monolith. System-Wide Outages From Single Failures. Every Enhancement a Major Project.
Five structural limitations were blocking platform stability, agility, and competitive positioning:
- Single component failures causing system-wide outages across all banking clients: Any failure within the monolithic application brought down the entire CMS simultaneously, creating unacceptable reliability exposure for every financial institution running on the platform
- Release cycles too slow to keep pace with banking client demands: The tightly coupled monolith made every enhancement slow, costly, and risky to implement, preventing the client from shipping features and fixes at the pace its banking clients required
- Maintenance overhead consuming engineering capacity with no efficiency path: Legacy code complexity and recurring maintenance costs were absorbing engineering time that should have been focused on platform improvement and client growth
- No dynamic scaling to meet fluctuating transaction and feature demands: The platform could not allocate resources dynamically or scale independently across components, creating a scalability ceiling that constrained every banking client it served
- No extensible architecture to support diverse financial institution requirements: The monolith could not be customized or configured for individual banking client needs, directly limiting the client’s ability to expand its addressable market and onboard new institutions
WHAT OPUS ENGINEERED
A Microservices-Based, API-First Card Management Platform Built for Independent Scaling, Fault Isolation, and Fast Delivery
Opus assembled a dedicated team of card domain experts and solution architects to design and deliver a future-ready platform modernization across architecture, deployment, integration, and automation:
- Microservices architecture migration: The CMS was transitioned from a monolithic design to a microservices-based architecture, enabling independent deployment, scalability, and fault isolation across every service component
- Decomposition of the monolith: The legacy application was logically decomposed into modular components using SOLID design principles, creating a clean architectural foundation for every subsequent capability built on the platform
- Microservices and micro frontends: A full suite of microservices and micro frontends was developed and deployed to support independent scalability and faster feature delivery across every banking client configuration
- API gateway integration via Apigee: All services were exposed through an Apigee API gateway with OAuth-based tokenization, ensuring secure access, consistent governance, and clean integration with both new and existing financial systems
- Container-based deployment on Kubernetes: Microservices were deployed on Kubernetes clusters, enabling resilience, high availability, and dynamic scaling to meet fluctuating transaction and feature demands
- Automated CI/CD pipelines: Continuous integration and deployment pipelines were implemented to streamline releases, reduce manual deployment overhead, and accelerate the feature delivery cycles that the monolith had made painfully slow
- Extensible platform design: The new architecture was built to be highly customizable, allowing financial institutions to adopt and configure features based on their specific operational and regulatory requirements
THE SHIFT
Fault-Isolated Services. Faster Releases. Lower Maintenance Costs. A Platform That Scales With Demand.
The microservices modernization delivered measurable improvements across reliability, delivery speed, maintenance efficiency, and scalability:
- Fault isolation through independent microservices eliminated the system-wide outages that had made the monolithic CMS a reliability liability across every banking client it served
- Modular architecture and CI/CD automation significantly reduced release cycles, giving the client the ability to ship enhancements and fixes at a pace the monolith never permitted
- Simplified updates and a modern technology stack lowered ongoing maintenance costs, freeing engineering capacity from the recurring overhead that tightly coupled legacy code had been generating
- Container-based Kubernetes deployment enabled dynamic resource allocation to meet fluctuating demand, removing the scalability ceiling that had been constraining the client’s ability to onboard and serve diverse financial institutions
- The extensible platform design now allows financial institutions to customize and adopt features based on their specific needs, directly expanding the client’s addressable market and competitive positioning
