API-driven Digital Direct Deposit Switching Solution for a US Bank

THE CLIENT

A Consumer Bank Opening Accounts But Losing the Payroll Deposits That Make Them Profitable

The client is a consumer-focused bank aiming to deepen customer relationships and grow core deposit balances across checking and savings products.

Account openings were strong. Deposit balances were not.

A large portion of customers continued directing their payroll to other financial institutions, leaving the bank with active accounts that were not generating the deposit inflows that drive account profitability and long-term engagement.

With digital-first banks offering instant payroll switching, the client could no longer afford a manual, paper-based process as its answer to a problem that was costing it customers and balances every month.

Opus was engaged to design and deliver the digital switching experience that would change that.

THE CONTEXT

Paper Forms. Manual Follow-Ups. A Switching Process That Was Losing Customers Before It Started.

Four structural barriers were blocking payroll deposit switching adoption and account retention:

  • Direct deposit participation stuck at 28% because switching required manual paper forms: Customers who wanted to redirect payroll had to complete and submit paper-based forms, creating friction and delays at exactly the moment a new account relationship should have been building momentum, leaving nearly three quarters of the addressable base un-switched
  • Onboarding conversion undermined by a switching process that did not complete: New account openings were not converting into active primary banking relationships because the payroll switching journey was too friction-filled to complete, leaving accounts dormant and onboarding conversion rates far below what the business needed
  • 90-day account retention suffering because payroll never followed the customer: Customers who did not switch their direct deposit had weaker engagement, lower balances, and higher churn rates, directly depressing the 90-day retention metric that determined long-term account profitability
  • No API infrastructure or fintech connectivity to automate payroll redirection: Legacy core systems and the absence of real-time employer discovery capability made it impossible to automate the switching process, leaving the bank unable to compete with digital-first rivals offering instant payroll switching through modern fintech integrations

WHAT OPUS ENGINEERED

An End-to-End, API-Driven Payroll Switching Platform Launched in 12 Weeks

Opus partnered with the client to design and deliver a seamless payroll redirection experience integrated across existing banking channels:

  • Strategic assessment and business case development: A comprehensive assessment of customer journeys, operational processes, and ecosystem readiness defined a scalable and compliant switching strategy before any build began
  • End-to-end user journey design: Intuitive, step-by-step use cases were designed to guide customers through payroll switching with minimal effort and clear visibility into progress at every stage
  • API and orchestration platform: An API-first orchestration layer was built to automate payroll redirection while integrating securely with legacy core systems, removing the manual dependency that had defined the previous process
  • Integration with Pinwheel: Real-time employer discovery and payroll connectivity was enabled through Pinwheel, directly eliminating the dependency on manual forms and follow-up workflows
  • FDX-compliant architecture: Integration APIs were delivered in alignment with FDX standards, ensuring secure data sharing, consent management, and regulatory compliance across the full switching workflow
  • Omnichannel enablement: SDKs for online and mobile banking were delivered to ensure a consistent switching experience across all customer touchpoints
  • Rapid time to market: A soft launch was supported within 12 weeks, enabling early value realization and iterative improvement based on real customer behavior

THE SHIFT

Deposit Participation Almost Doubled in 30 Days. Conversion Up 42%. Retention Up 15%.

The digital payroll switching platform delivered measurable improvements across deposit growth, onboarding conversion, and account retention within the first month of launch:

  • Direct deposit participation grew from 28% to 48% within 30 days of launch, a 20-percentage-point increase driven by removing the friction that had been blocking customers from completing the switch
  • Onboarding conversion improved by 42% as higher switch completion rates converted new account openings into active primary banking relationships rather than dormant accounts
  • 90-day account retention improved from 62% to 77%, a 15-percentage-point gain reflecting the stronger engagement that came with customers directing payroll to the bank rather than a competitor
  • Clear consent management and data-sharing disclosures built customer confidence in the switching process, addressing the trust gap that manual and opaque paper-based workflows had created
