THE CLIENT
A Full-Stack Payments Provider Running Growth on Infrastructure Built for a Smaller Business
The client is a full-stack payments provider offering merchant onboarding, setup, and card processing applications that power reliable transaction cycles and core commerce flows.
As transaction volumes increased and technology expectations evolved, the existing on-premise infrastructure became costly, rigid, and increasingly difficult to scale.
The client needed to move to a cloud-native environment, build internal cloud expertise, and improve system resilience and security without disrupting live payment operations.
Opus partnered with the provider to design and execute the full transformation end-to-end.
THE CONTEXT
On-Premise Infrastructure. Growing Transaction Volumes. A Widening Gap Between the Two. Here are challenges were blocking the client’s ability to scale and compete:
- Application response times too slow for growing transaction volumes: On-premise systems could not handle increasing peak loads, creating performance bottlenecks that slowed transaction processing and degraded the merchant and end-user experience
- High operational costs from managing infrastructure in-house: Running databases, message queues, and application servers manually required significant maintenance effort and ongoing investment, driving operational overhead with no automation path to reduce it
- No built-in data protection or compliance controls: The legacy environment lacked the encryption at rest and in transit, access controls, and managed security features that payment processing compliance required
- UAT defect rates slowing every release cycle: Legacy testing environments produced higher defect counts and delayed release cycles, consuming engineering time and pushing every new feature to market slower than the business needed
- No elastic scaling to absorb transaction volume spikes: On-premise infrastructure could not scale dynamically to meet demand, meaning every volume increase required new infrastructure investment rather than automatic capacity adjustment
WHAT OPUS ENGINEERED
A Comprehensive Cloud-Native Migration and Modernization Strategy on AWS
Opus designed and implemented a full AWS modernization strategy covering databases, messaging, applications, security, and testing infrastructure:
- Database modernization with AWS Aurora: Migrated on-premise Oracle databases to AWS Aurora, improving performance, availability, and scalability while reducing database management overhead
- Automated schema conversion: Implemented AWS Schema Conversion Tool to automate conversion of Oracle database objects to Aurora-compatible formats, accelerating migration timelines and cutting manual effort
- Queue modernization using Amazon SQS: Replaced legacy messaging queues with Amazon SQS, eliminating queue infrastructure management and improving reliability
- Application migration to AWS EC2: Moved business applications to EC2 instances, enabling flexible scaling, improved availability, and simplified infrastructure operations
- Seamless cloud integration: Maintained application-to-database connectivity and data integrity throughout the migration, with no disruption to live payment operations
- Reference merchant application development: Built and deployed two new applications including a reference merchant application on AWS to improve testing scenarios and reduce downstream UAT issues
- Cloud-native security enablement: Integrated AWS-native encryption at rest and in transit to strengthen data protection and compliance readiness across the platform
THE SHIFT
Faster Transactions, Lower Costs, Cleaner Releases
The AWS modernization delivered measurable improvements across performance, cost, and release quality:
- Application response times improved by approximately 35 to 40%, ensuring faster transaction processing and a better experience for merchants and end users
- Operational overhead dropped by approximately 30% as AWS managed services and automation replaced manual infrastructure management tasks
- UAT defects fell by approximately 25% following deployment of the reference merchant application, producing smoother and faster release cycles
- Elastic scaling and higher availability now support future growth without requiring new infrastructure investment for every volume spike
- Built-in encryption and managed security features strengthened data protection and compliance readiness across the full platform
