the Client
A Fintech Company Ready to Move Beyond Transactions
The client is an innovative fintech company focused on delivering modern financial experiences for businesses through digital platforms. As demand grew from B2B customers seeking embedded financial services, the client identified a strategic opportunity to expand beyond transaction processing into full banking-like capabilities.
To achieve this, they needed to launch a BaaS platform that could support inbound fund transfers, spend management, instant payouts, and scalable partner onboarding while keeping regulatory burden low and time-to-market short. They engaged Opus to design and implement a compliant, cloud-native solution built on proven fintech infrastructure.
The CONTEXT
Business and Implementation Challenges in Building a BaaS Platform
Building a BaaS and embedded finance platform from the ground up presented several interconnected challenges that had to be solved together.
- Expanding beyond transaction processing. The existing platform handled online transactions but did not support inbound fund transfers or account-based money movement, which were needed to enable real-time spend management and treasury use cases.
- Delivering bank-like capabilities without a banking license. The solution needed to support account issuance, inbound and outbound money movement, virtual card issuance with spending controls, and lending enablement, all within a seamless digital experience and without the cost or time of becoming a regulated bank.
- Compliance and regulatory complexity. Building KYC, KYB, and licensing frameworks from scratch would have significantly increased time, cost, and risk. The client needed a way to embed compliance into the platform without taking on direct regulatory exposure.
- Partner onboarding at scale. To support growth, the platform needed to onboard B2B partners programmatically with minimal manual effort while still meeting regulatory and risk requirements.
- Speed to market. Competitive pressure in the fintech space made a fast MVP launch critical for validating the business model and securing early partners.
What Opus ENGINEERED
A Cloud-Native BaaS Platform Powered by Stripe
Opus designed and implemented a modular, scalable Banking-as-a-Service platform that enabled rapid deployment while reducing regulatory and operational complexity.
- Cloud-native architecture and UI design. Opus built intuitive user interfaces and microservices on AWS for customer data capture, validation, and request execution, ensuring scalability, resilience, and a seamless experience for both end customers and partners.
- Partner onboarding with Stripe Connect. The platform integrated Stripe Connect APIs to onboard B2B partners with built-in KYB and compliance workflows. External bank accounts were mapped to enable secure inbound and outbound fund transfers, significantly reducing manual onboarding effort.
- Account issuance and fund storage with Stripe Treasury. Opus used Stripe Treasury to issue accounts and store funds in FDIC-insured partner banks, enabling ACH transfers and secure fund management without requiring the client to hold direct banking licenses.
- Instant card issuance with Stripe Issuing. The platform enabled instant creation of virtual cards with configurable spending controls, supporting real-time spend management and improved flexibility for end users.
- Unified transaction visibility and reporting. Integration with the Stripe Dashboard allowed transaction data to be surfaced within the client’s own reporting platform, giving partners clear visibility into balances, transactions, and spend patterns.
THE SHIFT
Faster Launch, Scalable Growth, and Built-In Compliance
The platform delivered strong results across speed, scale, and risk management from day one.
- MVP launched in under 8 weeks. The fintech brought a fully functional BaaS platform to market in less than 8 weeks, well ahead of what a traditional build approach would have allowed.
- 5 times growth in B2B partner onboarding. Programmatic onboarding through Stripe Connect enabled rapid scaling, resulting in a fivefold increase in B2B partners on the platform.
- Built-in compliance with lower regulatory costs. By leveraging Stripe’s KYB and KYC compliance stack, the client maintained strong governance while significantly reducing legal and regulatory overhead.
- Reduced issuer declines. Pre-issuance account balance checks through Stripe Connect helped reduce card issuance declines, improving approval rates and the overall customer experience.
