Modernizing Merchant Data Infrastructure at Enterprise Scale

the Client

A Fortune 500 Payments Leader Serving Merchants Worldwide

The client is a Fortune 500 global leader in payments and financial services technology, headquartered in the United States. They manage infrastructure for 10,000 financial institutions and 6 million merchant locations across 100 countries, facilitating billions of transactions annually and serving as critical infrastructure for international commerce.

The CONTEXT

Enterprise-Scale Migration Complexity Threatening Operations

Decommissioning a legacy payment gateway at this scale meant managing several compounding risks at the same time, with zero tolerance for service disruption.

  • High volume of merchants. Managing data and functionality across approximately 140,000 SMB merchants created significant complexity in coordinating a seamless transition without disrupting revenue-generating operations.
  • Significant data volume. Transferring over 5TB of critical transaction data required robust infrastructure, rigorous validation, and careful handling to ensure data integrity and compliance throughout the process.
  • Data inconsistency and integrity risks. Ensuring consistency, security, and completeness across disparate legacy systems posed real risks to data accuracy and operational reliability.
  • Risk of downtime. Minimizing service disruption was non-negotiable. Any downtime would directly threaten merchant revenue and damage customer trust.
  • API integration complexity. Supporting 24 versions of client APIs across multiple formats including SOAP, XML, and JSON required sophisticated abstraction and backwards compatibility to prevent disruptions on the merchant side.

What Opus ENGINEERED

End-to-End Data Migration and API Integration Strategy

Opus executed a comprehensive migration approach spanning data architecture, API orchestration, and merchant enablement to achieve a zero-downtime transition across all 140,000 merchants.

  • Google Data Fusion ETL implementation. Opus proposed and implemented Google Data Fusion as the enterprise ETL tool, providing scalable and reliable data movement capabilities for 5TB of transaction data across legacy and modern systems.
  • Data dictionary and relationship documentation. Comprehensive data dictionary and relationship documents were created for over 500 tables, ensuring data mapping accuracy and enabling merchant-level transparency throughout the migration.
  • Custom migration plugin development. Custom plugins were developed to handle complex migrations that standard ETL tools could not support, covering non-standard data patterns and legacy system quirks.
  • API layer architecture. An API layer was built to support all 24 versions of the client’s APIs across SOAP, XML, and JSON formats, providing backwards compatibility while abstracting underlying infrastructure changes from merchant integrations.
  • Merchant control application redesign. The hosted checkout was re-developed as an installable micro-app with customer-configurable settings, giving merchants enhanced operational control post-migration without requiring IT intervention.

THE SHIFT

Enterprise-Scale Transformation with Zero Disruption

Opus delivered a migration that preserved operational continuity for every merchant while unlocking significant business value for the client.

  • $5M in annual savings. Optimized gateway operations and eliminated legacy infrastructure costs, delivering a direct and measurable impact on the bottom line.
  • 140,000 merchants migrated without disruption. All SMB merchants were transitioned to the client’s modern platform with no changes required on their end, preserving functionality, credentials, and service continuity throughout.
  • Enhanced operational control for merchants. The redesigned hosted checkout app gave merchants expanded functionality and self-service control over their accounts, driving higher engagement and satisfaction.
  • 24 API versions integrated. All 24 API versions across SOAP, XML, and JSON formats were successfully abstracted and integrated, ensuring zero disruption to existing merchant integrations.
  • Zero-downtime execution. The migration was completed without a single service interruption, safeguarding merchant revenue and preserving the client’s market reputation.
