Next-Gen Payments Solution Unifying Card and Account-to-Account Payments

THE CLIENT

A Global Payments Provider Processing Trillions Annually Whose Legacy Architecture Could Not Keep Pace With Real-Time Demands

The client is a leading global provider of real-time payments and digital payment software solutions operating across 94 countries, supporting 9,000 organizations including 6,000 large financial institutions and merchants.

Processing trillions of dollars annually, the organization sits at the center of critical payments infrastructure worldwide.

Legacy transaction architecture, rigid acceptance frameworks, and batch-processing models were blocking the client from meeting real-time payment demands, ISO 20022 mandates, and the expectations of Tier 2 and Tier 3 banks looking for modern, affordable entry points.

Opus was engaged to design and build the unified, cloud-native SaaS platform that would fix all three.

THE CONTEXT

Real-Time Mandates. ISO 20022 Deadlines. Legacy Architecture That Could Not Do Either.

Five structural challenges were blocking growth, compliance, and competitive relevance:

  • Tier 2 and Tier 3 banks priced out of modern payments infrastructure: The cost and complexity of existing payment platforms created an affordability barrier that prevented mid-market financial institutions from accessing real-time payment capabilities, limiting the client’s addressable market and sales growth potential
  • Legacy batch-processing models creating 24/7 availability gaps: Existing infrastructure could not support always-on transaction processing, exposing partner banks and their customers to availability vulnerabilities that real-time payment demands made impossible to ignore
  • Partner banks unable to launch RTP and FedNow offerings competitively: Rigid legacy acceptance frameworks could not adapt to RTP and FedNow network requirements fast enough, leaving partner banks unable to compete against fintech entrants and larger institutions that were already live on real-time rails
  • Total cost of ownership too high for sustained partner bank adoption: Cloud-native shared services and multi-tenant architecture did not exist on the legacy platform, meaning every partner bank carried the full infrastructure and operational cost burden with no shared efficiency model to reduce it
  • No open API layer to support fintech partner integrations: The legacy platform lacked the flexible API framework and orchestration capabilities that partner banks needed to collaborate with fintech entrants capturing first customer touchpoints, limiting ecosystem growth and competitive positioning

WHAT OPUS ENGINEERED

A Unified, ISO 20022-Native, Cloud-Native SaaS Platform Built for Real-Time, Multi-Rail, and Mid-Market Scale

Opus deployed a team of payment experts and architects to design and implement a future-ready payments platform covering every rail, every compliance requirement, and every integration need:

  • Dedicated real-time services for RTP and FedNow: New real-time payment services were built specifically to support the rapid processing demands of RTP and FedNow networks from day one
  • Extended service layer across ACH, high-value, and cross-border rails: Versatile new services were engineered to handle standard ACH, high-value payments, and complex cross-border transactions within the same unified platform
  • ISO 20022 compliance embedded into the core: The entire platform was built as an ISO 20022-native system from the ground up, ensuring full regulatory compliance and rich data messaging without retrofitting
  • Open API layer for digital and third-party integration: Comprehensive external and internal APIs, a dedicated Rules Engine, and a centralized Orchestration Platform were built to facilitate rapid deployments and fintech partner integrations
  • End-to-end connectivity across all critical payment networks: Direct integrations were executed connecting the platform to RTP, FedNow, Fedwire, FedACH, SWIFT, and other critical payment infrastructure across domestic and cross-border corridors

THE SHIFT

Mid-Market Banks Now Have an Affordable Entry Point. Real-Time Products Launch Faster. Sales Are Growing.

The unified cloud-native SaaS platform delivered measurable improvements across market access, cost structure, time to market, and sales performance:

  • Multi-tenant SaaS capabilities lowered entry barriers for Tier 2 and Tier 3 banks, creating a scalable growth engine for mid-market financial institutions that had previously been priced out of modern payments infrastructure
  • Cloud-native architecture and shared services significantly reduced total cost of ownership for partner banks, directly addressing the affordability barrier that had been limiting adoption among smaller institutions
  • Banks leveraging the new platform rapidly launched RTP and FedNow offerings, strengthening their competitive positioning against fintech entrants and larger institution rivals
  • The SaaS model directly expanded the client’s sales footprint and market presence, converting platform modernization into a commercial growth engine across the mid-market segment
  • Always-on processing and 24/7 operational resilience replaced the batch-processing vulnerabilities that had been creating availability gaps for partner banks and their customers
