Point of Sale (POS) Solution Integration Drives 25% YoY Cost Savings for a Fuel Dispenser Manufacturer

THE CLIENT

A Global Fuel Dispenser Manufacturer With Mission-Critical POS Systems and a Seven-Year Partnership

The client is a leading global fuel dispenser manufacturer providing hardware and software solutions for retail fuel stations worldwide.

Their POS systems process high-volume, time-sensitive payment transactions across indoor and outdoor environments, requiring integration with multiple acquirers, full EMV compliance, and seamless hardware-software interoperability.

To ensure compliance, scalability, and high performance across the full program lifecycle, the client engaged Opus to own integration, certification, testing, and deployment end-to-end.

THE CONTEXT

Europay, Mastercard, and Visa (EMV) Mandates. Multiple Acquirers. Hardware That Had to Work Everywhere.

Four structural challenges defined the complexity of this engagement:

  • Network-mandated EMV compliance deadlines with no delivery partner in place: Indoor POS systems faced a hard compliance deadline of October 2015 and outdoor environments faced 2020, with full L3 certification required across multiple acquirers and networks and no existing program structure capable of delivering it on time
  • High live system dependency driving up testing costs year over year: Every integration and certification activity relied heavily on physical live systems, making testing expensive, slow, and difficult to scale as the program grew across new acquirers and product configurations
  • Multi-acquirer POS integration too complex to manage without full program ownership: Connecting POS and EPS solutions across multiple acquirers while managing evolving requirements from scheme networks, hardware vendors, and internal stakeholders required end-to-end accountability that the client could not sustain internally
  • No remote device management capability across the installed base: Software updates, monitoring, and deployment across indoor and outdoor POS environments required on-site intervention, creating operational overhead and scaling risk across a growing global installed base

WHAT OPUS ENGINEERED

Full Program Ownership Across Seven Years of Integration, Certification, and Delivery

Opus owned the complete technical and programmatic scope for over seven years, with a team of 50-plus architects, SMEs, developers, QA engineers, and business analysts working across every phase:

  • End-to-end L3 EMV certification: Managed the entire certification lifecycle for both indoor and outdoor POS systems, ensuring full compliance with all network-mandated EMV requirements on schedule
  • Multi-acquirer POS integration: Integrated POS and EPS solutions with multiple acquirers, enabling advanced payment options across retail fuel environments
  • Hardware device interfacing and remote management: Implemented secure interfacing with key hardware devices, remote monitoring, and software deployment capability that required no on-site intervention
  • Requirements and product management: Maintained continuous liaison with acquirers, scheme networks, and internal stakeholders to manage evolving requirements and ensure timely delivery across every program phase
  • Automation and simulators for cost reduction: Built simulators and automation tools to reduce dependency on live systems for testing, directly driving the 25% year-on-year cost savings delivered across the engagement
  • Reusable test and automation artifacts: Delivered simulators, automated test frameworks, and reusable scripts that reduced testing costs and live system dependency for future program phases

THE SHIFT

Certified. Connected. Cost-Efficient. For Seven Years Running.

The program delivered sustained improvements across compliance, operational efficiency, and cost structure:

  • Full L3 EMV compliance was achieved for both indoor and outdoor POS environments, meeting all network-mandated deadlines without operational disruption
  • Remote device management eliminated the need for on-site intervention to push updates, monitor system health, or deploy software changes across the installed base
  • Automation and simulators reduced live system dependency throughout the program, consistently delivering approximately 25% year-on-year cost savings across testing and integration activities
  • Over seven-plus years of full program ownership, Opus maintained continuity, quality, and scalability as requirements evolved, acquirer landscapes shifted, and new payment methods emerged
