DevOps-Driven Cloud Transformation Modernizes ATM Switch Operations for a Global Fintech Leader

THE CLIENT

A Global Fintech Giant With a Legacy Switch Platform Running Out of Road

The client is a leading global financial technology organization offering a wide range of payment, banking, and ATM switch solutions.

Over time the organization had built its product portfolio across diverse tools, platforms, and technologies that were functionally strong but operationally complex and difficult to scale.

With cloud-native ATM switch providers gaining ground fast, the organization recognized that modernizing its legacy switch systems was no longer optional.

The goal was to move to the cloud, enable interoperability, improve scalability, and simplify deployment through DevOps-driven automation.

Opus partnered with the organization to design and execute the full transformation.

THE CONTEXT

Cloud-Native Competitors Were Moving Faster. The Legacy Stack Was Holding the Client Back.

Five structural challenges made modernization urgent:

  • Deployment defects slowing every release cycle: Distributing and deploying switch components across client environments was error-prone and impossible to standardize, making every release a risk management exercise that consumed engineering time and eroded confidence
  • DevOps teams buried in manual deployment work: Disparate tools, inconsistent processes, and heavy manual overhead consumed engineering capacity that should have been focused on higher-value work, leaving the organization slower and less competitive with every cycle
  • Deployment cycle completion rates stuck at 60%: Build, test, and deployment cycles were unreliable and incomplete, with four in ten cycles failing to reach completion and creating unpredictability across every release
  • No scalable, cloud-ready switch architecture: The existing platform lacked the elastic scaling, containerization, and cloud-native deployment capabilities needed to meet growing transaction demand and modern integration requirements
  • Packaging and distribution too complex to standardize: Switch components were packaged and deployed inconsistently across environments, making every client installation a custom effort with no reusable model to accelerate future deployments

WHAT OPUS ENGINEERED

A Phased DevOps and Cloud Enablement Strategy on Microsoft Azure

Opus designed and executed a comprehensive cloud transformation using Azure, an image-based distribution model, and a structured three-phase modernization approach:

  • Cloud migration using image-based distribution: Migrated the full ATM Switch application and its modules to Microsoft Azure, simplifying packaging and client-side installation
  • Advanced cloud automation for packaging: Standardized how switch components were packaged, deployed, and updated across environments using cloud automation technologies
  • Elastic scalability by design: Enabled both horizontal and vertical scaling to dynamically adapt to transaction volume and operational demand
  • Phased modernization approach to minimize risk:
  • Phase 1: Lift-and-shift migration of the Switch and Core Database to Azure
  • Phase 2: Containerization of the GUI service and implementation of Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS)
  • Phase 3: Containerization of all remaining switch components, excluding the database
  • DevOps standardization and CI/CD enablement: Established standardized pipelines, deployment processes, and evaluation metrics to improve consistency and reliability across every release

THE SHIFT

Fewer Defects, Faster Cycles, More Capacity for What Matters

The transformation delivered measurable improvements across quality, speed, and team efficiency:

  • Automated, standardized deployments reduced deployment defects by approximately 60%, removing the errors that had made every release cycle a risk management exercise
  • Improved automation freed DevOps team capacity by 1.5x, allowing engineers to focus on higher-value work instead of manual deployment management
  • Build, test, and deployment cycle times improved from 60% to 90% completion rates, enabling faster releases and better responsiveness to business needs
  • Centralized code repositories and standard metrics improved governance, traceability, and operational visibility across the organization
  • The Azure-based, containerized architecture now positions the switch platform for long-term growth and modern integration requirements
